President Van Rompuy Tries To Steal UK's Thunder Over Libya

In an article in the Daily Express today the un-elected president of Europe, Herman Van Rompuy, is claiming victory for the EU, saying that they have saved Libya from a bloodbath because of Brussels diplomacy. He stated in his speech “From the beginning, the European Union was at the forefront.  Without European leadership there would have been massacres.  We acted in time and without Europe nothing would have been done at the global level or at the UN level.”

This astonishing announcement by Van Rompuy would appear to be wishful thinking.  EU foreign Affairs Minister Baroness Ashton,  put a block on any action of a no-fly zone proposed by the UK within the first weeks of the Libya rebellion. Action was only taken after a United Nations resolution based on proposals previously put by Britain.
